Autori della cosiddetta teoria della “de-evoluzione”, i Devo sostenevano che i Rolling Stones avessero copiato un loro hit, Satisfaction, in quanto il mondo andava alla rovescia. Infatti, durante i loro concerti proiettavano un documentario-video clip ante litteram, dal programmatico titolo In the beginning was the end, contenente apocalittiche visioni di un futuro iper nuclearizzato, disumanizzato e grottesco.
Furono influenzati a loro volta dai Residents, gruppo che nacque orientativamente 4 anni prima di loro e che fece nel 1976 un’altra cover della stessa Satisfaction ancor più bizzarra, destrutturata e inascoltabile. Dato che praticamente nessuno ha mai visto il volto dei Residents, la stampa ha lungamente vociferato sul fatto che possa essersi verificata una collaborazione tra i Residents e alcuni membri dei Devo, specialmente dei fratelli Mothersbaugh, in particolare durante il periodo di inattività dei Devo (tra 1991 e 1996). Un esempio è il sound dei pezzi di “Our finest Flowers” che nelle chitarre ricorda molto i dischi dei Devo.
La versione robotica di Satisfaction decretò il loro successo, che fu sempre di critica (quasi tutti i gruppi di oggi li citano come fondamentali) ma mai di pubblico (quantomeno a livello della loro importanza). Tuttavia, i primi tre album, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! del 1978, prodotto da Brian Eno, Duty Now For The Future del 1979 e Freedom of Choice del 1980, fruttarono alla band una certa notorietà, che li portò a vendere un milione di copie col terzo LP che conteneva l’hit Whip It.
Autori di una perfetta fusione tra rock e melodie sintetizzate, precursori nel look, straniante e post atomico (imperdibili i loro videoclip pionieristici), i Devo furono vittima della loro stessa teoria de-evolutiva e non furono capaci di rinnovarsi, o forse vennero superati dagli stessi gruppi che li avevano presi a modello.
I successivi album, sempre di discreto livello, li videro però incapaci di progredire. Fecero comunque fare un balzo in avanti nella produzione dei suoni e nella costruzione dei brani, che a tutt’oggi resta un punto di riferimento per band e produttori.
Parallelamente all’attività con i Devo, e fino agli anni recenti, Mark Mothersbaugh ha composto diverse colonne sonore per film.
Nel 2003 alcuni membri dei Devo hanno registrato un album con i The Network dal titolo “Money Money 2020”. La band, come nelle copertine del cd, si presenta al pubblico mascherata, anche se ormai è noto che ne fanno parte anche tutti i componenti dei Green Day, infatti si riconosce chiaramente il timbro della voce di Billie Joe.L’album è stato rilasciato dalla sua casa discografica Adeline
I Devo nel 2010 hanno pubblicato un nuovo album in studio ‘Something for Everybody’, inizialmente previsto per il 2009
