Nel panorama della seconda metà degli anni ’80 i Pixies risultano una realtà inusuale e, senza dubbio, unica. Coniugando alla melodia la furia del punk, questi quattro ragazzi di Boston (Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV alias Blak Francis, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago e David Lovering) ispirando un’intera generazione di “outsider” con canzoni brevi, sognanti o rumorose, impreziosite da testi surreali e bizzarri (sotto la benedizione di Ivo Watts-Russell della 4AD). Scioltisi nel 1993 con un EP e quattro album all’attivo (“Come on Pilgrim”, “Surfer Rosa”, “Doolittle”, “Bossanova” e “Trompe le Monde”) tornano alla ribalta nel 2004 per un tour mondiale, supportati da un autentico culto di massa (complice il tributo pagato da gruppi come Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Pavement) che li hanno spesso segnalati come propria principale influenza compositiva. Nel 2013 Kim Deal lascia la band, proprio nel momento in cui i Pixies decidono di rilasciare del nuovo materiale. Viene prontamente rimpiazzata da Kim Shattuck (The Muffs, The Pandoras) che seguirà il gruppo durante il tour che accompagna l’uscita di “EP1”.
